Leader’s guide to supporting staff

Managing people can be challenging even when piloting the calmest of skies.
As leaders, we always need to make sure we’re prepared to adapt and respond calmly to any unforeseen turbulence along the journey but this is not straightforward when faced with such a unique set of circumstances. COVID-19 has presented leaders of all types – from Heads of Government to CEOs, to teams leaders – with an unprecedented examination of our leadership capabilities.
While this may seem daunting or even overwhelming at times there are some key things to remember:
- Some anxiety is a perfectly natural response given the circumstances – what’s important is how we respond to that anxiety
- We’re all in this together – this isn’t unique to you, your team or even your company so regardless of how we’re feeling, countless others will be feeling the same as we are in that exact moment
- We’re all learning – it’s likely that we’ll look back at 2020 as one of the most challenging years of our careers but quite possibly, the year of our greatest development as leaders
- It will end – at times we’ll question whether it feels like it will, but eventually we’ll reach our destination.
